Vikings Select Everson Griffen

With the 100th pick overall (2nd of the 4th round) the Vikings have taken Everson Griffen, DE, USC. Griffen was projected by many as a late 1st, early 2nd round pick, but his stock fell due to concerns with his motivation. Griffen has great size and athletic ability, but doesn't give his full effort every play. Griffen becomes the 3rd DE the Vikings have taken in the 4th round under the Childress era. He joins Ray Edwards (2006) and Brian Robison (2007). The Vikings did not have a fourth round pick in 2008 or 2009.

Gerhart is the Vikings 2nd Pick

With a bit of a surprise, the Vikings traded up to take RB Toby Gerhart out of Stanford. Gerhart was a final candidate for the Heisman trophy this past year.

Vikings Select Chris Cook

With the 34th overall pick, the Vikings went with DB Chris Cook from Virginia. Cook was covered in my earlier analysis of players we drafted. The top of the 2nd is thought to be a little high for Cook and the Vikings may have been able to get him at the end of the 2nd round. Time will tell whether or not it was a good pick.

Vikings Lost Out on 2 Targeted CB's

The Vikings traded their first round pick to the Lions late last night in exchange for the Lions 2nd round pick (34th overall) and a swapping of 4th round picks as well as a 7th rounder. As it turns out, the Vikings had CB Kyle Wilson on the phone about 5 minutes before the Jets took him at pick 29, one in front of Minnesota. VP or Player Personnel Rick Spielman would not confirm or deny, but did say the Vikings tried to trade up for a player that went in the area they were picking.

Chip Scoggins and Judd Zulgad revealed this morning that when the Vikings traded down after failing to get Kyle Wilson, they were planning on CB Patrick Robinson of Florida State falling to them at 34 and that likely would've been the selection. It's still impossible to predict who the Vikings will pick tonight with that 2nd pick, but some of the options include QB Jimmy Clausen, DE/OLB Sergio Kindle, and S Taylor Mays. Another trade down is not out of the question.
